Because the mesh is in play, three things follow. First, the mesh has to be uniformly strong so the ball rebounds predictably from every panel; a slack or deformed mesh gives an inconsistent bounce and changes the game. Second, the inside face has to be flat — no protruding wire ends, rough welds or sharp edges, because a player chasing a rebound can collide with the panel and a protruding wire is a laceration risk. The mesh itself is where suppliers quietly differ. The specification that most buyers get wrong is the wire diameter — a 2 mm mesh looks identical to a 4 mm mesh in a photograph, but it is dramatically weaker, deforms in a season and produces an inconsistent rebound.

Two points to emphasise. Welded mesh beats chain link for padel. A chain link fence can flex and follow a frame, which is why it works for a tennis perimeter that simply contains the ball; a padel mesh is a rebound surface, so it needs the rigidity of an electro-welded flat panel. Wire diameter 4 mm is the number to insist on for a club or competitive court — it resists deformation, keeps the rebound flat and is well within the FIP limit. A 3 mm mesh is a legitimate budget grade, but a 2 mm mesh is a downgrade you should not accept.
The mesh must also be put in correctly: the inner face of the mesh (the side the players touch) should face the court and sit flat, and the mesh-to-glass transition must finish flush so the ball rebounds cleanly at the joint. Hot-dip galvanizing is the corrosion layer you cannot skip on an outdoor padel fence. The mesh, posts and base plates sit exposed to rain, wind and sand; without a zinc layer the steel rusts from the cut edges and welds within a season. Powder coating gives the colour and adds a second barrier, and it is what makes a black, green or custom RAL fence instead of bare grey steel. For a premium club or a coastal site, fit galvanized steel with a powder top coat and confirm the zinc thickness and the RAL in writing.
There is one detail buyers miss on the fasteners. The bolts, washers and nuts that hold the mesh to the posts and the posts to the base plates should be stainless steel (SUS304) or better. Zinc-plated fasteners are the first thing to corrode on an outdoor court, and once a fixing fails the whole panel loosens. A court that promises a 5- or 10-year structural warranty needs stainless fasteners to actually deliver it.
The enclosure configuration is the second big decision, and it changes how much steel and glass you buy. Two main designs dominate the market.
Your choice affects both the enclosure and the mesh. The enclosure also has to integrate with three things you may not associate with the fence: the lighting (light fittings mount on the fence posts or on standalone columns set 4 m behind the back wall), the gate/access door (cut into the enclosure layout, so the door position and the opening must be fixed at fabrication), and the foundation (the base plates bolt to a concrete ring beam, so the posts and their footings are load-bearing and wind-load rated). Confirm all of these on the shop drawings before fabrication, not after.

If your court is near the sea, or in a humid climate, corrosion is the single biggest threat to the enclosure — and it is the reason many cheap courts fail. Salt air and constant moisture attack steel far faster than a dry inland site, and the mesh and its welds are the most exposed steel on the court.
